Critical Facade Examinations

Soodan & Associates, Inc. was selected to provide professional A/E services in connection with the Critical Examination of the exterior of five building facades for the below listed buildings at the University’s Chicago campus.

  • College of Nursing (Building No. 936) 152' high
  • College of Medicine West Tower (Building No. 909) 165' with 27' spire
  • College of Medicine East Tower (Building No. 910) 224' high
  • College of Medicine West (Building No. 908) 92' high
  • Human Resources Building (Building No. 907) 83' high

The Critical Examinations were conducted pursuant to Sections 13-196-031 through 13-196-038 of the Municipal Code of the City of Chicago.

Soodan’s scope of work included the following:

  • Review available drawings, documents and reports related to the original construction and previous inspection and repair work.
  • Prepare schematic diagrams and record drawings of the building walls to document observed conditions.
  • Conduct close-up visual examinations of the exterior wall elements from swing stage or hoist.
  • Examine eight inspection openings per building to investigate the substrate and condition of concealed anchors. The Owner’s swing stage contractor made the openings; and, after inspections by Soodan, the contractor closed the openings.
  • Identify and notify the Owner of potentially unsafe and hazardous conditions, and develop recommendations for temporary stabilization.
  • Work with the Owner to implement program to perform required temporary stabilization work.
  • Prepare a report for the Owner describing the condition of the exterior walls including repair recommendations and an opinion of probable construction cost for long-term repairs.

Soodan prepared a Critical Examination Report for each building that identifies the unsafe and hazardous conditions with recommendations for required temporary stabilization work. Soodan also developed a scope of work for long-term repairs and an opinion of probable construction cost for rehabilitation.

Soodan’s façade inspection staff has successfully completed the User/Erector safety training as required by the City of Chicago.
