Univeristy of Illinois at Chicago
East Recreation Center
| As part of Phillips Swager Associates team, Soodan & Associates, Inc. was selected by UIC to provide professional structural and civil engineering design services for this new three-story, 152,400 SF recreation center for the University to be located at the central area of UIC’s Chicago campus. The center, scheduled for opening in 2005, is to be utilized by UIC students and the public. Four full-size basketball courts, a multiple purpose court, indoor running track, fitness floor and swimming pool are being designed to provide additional recreational opportunities for the large UIC student population. The primary building system is a steel braced frame structure, and the 65-ft-tall vestibule and swimming pool are built up with a glass space frame structure. The architectural ribbon-like metal elements are designed and located at the swimming pool roof. The structural work designed by Soodan includes built up 100-ft-long span roof trusses with a hanging mechanical mezzanine floor. Four full-size basketball courts are located on a second level above the first level offices. The foundation system consists of 40 ton and 70 ton steel H piles. Soodan’s services include wind analysis, glass and metal element design and floor vibration analysis for the building. In addition to providing comprehensive structural design services, Soodan provided civil engineering services for site design including pavement layout, site grading, site utilities and stormwater detention. Soodan’s scope of work includes preparation of plans and specifications, opinion of probable construction cost and coordination with city and state agencies. |
