Metra - Jefferson Park Station

Soodan & Associates, Inc. was selected by Metra to provide architectural/engineering design services for the renovation of Metra’s elevated Jefferson Park Commuter Station and to provide design services to comply with the American Disability Act (“ADA”) requirements. The Jefferson Park Station is located at a significant transportation intersection that includes the Chicago Transit Authority’s (“CTA”) Blue Line commuter station with its pedestrian tunnel, Illinois Department of Transportation’s (“IDOT”) Kennedy Expressway and Metra’s Union Pacific Railroad North West line.

The Jefferson Park Station, with its two sets of stairs and escalators that connect the CTA pedestrian tunnel to the Station’s elevated platform level, required the following scope of work elements:

  • Review existing conditions and develop site studies.
  • Prepare schematic design phase alternatives with diverse ramp layouts.
  • Design new headhouses with canopies for inbound and outbound platforms.
  • Design platform improvements including replacement of benches, detectable warning tiles, light poles, signage, saltboxes, signalized crosswalks, and trash cans.
  • Prepare construction phase documents including architectural/engineering specifications.

The design challenges for the Jefferson Park Station demanded that the design be in harmony with strong modernist aesthetics of the existing CTA commuter station and pedestrian bridge and also accommodate the accessible ramp within major site constraints. Soodan was able to address the above challenges through design of pertinent architectural elements and by usage of light and easy-to-use construction materials. A stepping-down ramp configuration was employed to achieve maximum visual connection while following the existing topographical conditions of the site.
